I’m still here, though I’ve had a bad cold for a week and haven’t been modelling. Who is Brian Clarke?

Re: Modelearth modelling: 1/12 on 00 track

we really must find a better nomenclature for this scale/gauge combination - yet 1/12n16.5 seems incredibly clumsy too - any ideas guys? W maybe = whimsical. I think the scale/gauge name helps put the layout into a category - we expect different things from a Gn15 layout and an S4 layout, a differe...

Re: Eaton Hall & Co cakebox layout

Thanks Doc and Gerald. Gerald: your bricks look just like I wanted to achieve - subtle colour and the grout looks perfect. I looked on your website where you describe making them and will try what you have done. You used grout for the mortar, is that the grout that people use to fill the joins betwe...

Re: Eaton Hall & Co cakebox layout

Bricks are done, a bit of a struggle. There seem to be two ways to finish bricks: 1 - Paint the bricks, then apply the ‘mortar’. The problem is that you can’t then change the brick colour much. 2 - Apply the ‘mortar’, then paint the bricks. The problem is how avoid getting brick colour on the mortar...

Wow, thank you Colin for taking the time and putting in the effort to restore the photos in this thread. I’m making a layout now that uses several of your ideas from here.

Video of goods handling in 50s Brittain

Here’s a promotional video from 50s Britain about the Scarab mechanical horse, a light truck. I liked the footage of goods moving by road and rail, and the backdrops. From Phil Parker’s blog.

Re: Eaton Hall & Co cakebox layout

Bricks happen. Inspired by Andi’s houses. It is a more recent style, with the concrete reinforcing, which calls for tidy bricklaying. Perhaps I should have modelled an earlier period.

Re: Crundells Estate

That’s looking good. I’ve made landscape with polystyrene (the cheap white bead kind) and I didn’t glue newspaper on it. I shaped it by picking bits of foam away to give a roughish surface, which looked sufficiently like ‘dirt’ when painted.

Ha, gorgeous. This thread is reminding me of the Birdwater & Raspberry RR, by Bruce Bates. He used to have a website of drawings of rolling stock like these and also made models. I think he died a couple of years ago and the website has gone. Here’s a link to a Facebook page: https://www.faceboo...

Don’t they look gorgeous. Thanks for the photo and dimensions. It is perhaps interesting to note that these dimensions, height excepted, are not much more than similar stuff in Gn15. Build one 16.5mm gauge layout and have two sets of buildings? I’ve noticed this too. On real railways, the narrower t...

I’m sorry to hear this. I always enjoyed the stories Andy wove about his layouts. And his modelling on gnatterbox has been an inspiration for me, particularly Cuddle. My sympathies to you, Sue. Hi Michael, I’m impressed that you are making a factory type layout with the buildings and track askew to the edges. When I’ve tried to do that, including my current cakebox layout, it’s never looked right. Personally, I prefer the arrangement in your second to last post, with the two alleys going r...

I’ve reposted one of Colin’s photos of the Ambassador Works layout unfinished but in its final configuration of 3 modules, each about 300 mm long. Most of this thread is about the module at the far end.
