The mechanism used is a Hornby 0.4.0 from a 'Smokey Joe'.

It was shortened slightly to allow it to fit the length of the footplate.

Howard : The spectacle rims are very similar to 'cup washers' but are actually 'eyelets', the type often used in material and clothing etc and are normally pressed together with a 'special tool'.
