Re: Herb's Mechanical

Thanks Doc. The shed frame is made out of craft sticks; two were laminated together for the frame lumber to give it a "beefier" look. The back and side slats are made from Popsicle sticks. Everything was done in a red wash of acrylics and weathered with powdered charcoal.

Re: Herb's Mechanical

Since I've been out of work for a few weeks, due to surgery, I had time to work on the layout. Here is a long overdue progress update: http://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/Amherst56/Herbs%20Mechanical/IMG_15.jpg The "office", along the back wall, is built as well as the "critter ...

Re: Herb's Mechanical

Time to update my progress. I have the layout wired-up with each track wired independently, including the turntable and the fiddle track: http://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/Amherst56/Herbs%20Mechanical/IMG_4.jpg If you look at the turntable, I have the wires soldered to the inside of the trac...

Hi and welcome to the Gnuthouse. Your critter looks really good and in such a short time. Looking forward to what you do next.

Re: Geoff Potter's Gn15 2015 challenge layout

What a great start to the Challenge. I like the idea of the fossil dig and will be very different from what has been done before.
Will be watching these 2015 Challenges with great interest. Won't be jumping-in myself as I have a project already underway.
Keep going, looking good.

Re: Herb's Mechanical

Hey Simon; yes the CD bottom part of the case is below the foam-core. I did have to shim it with card to bring the track of the turn-table up to level with the other tracks. It works reasonably well for what it is.
This is going to be fun.

Re: Herb's Mechanical

Thanks Doc, the critter bonnet actually is a texture from the internet of badly rusted metal printed on paper and attached to "card" which the bonnet as made from.

Herb's Mechanical

Now that I have some spare time, after a rough winter, I am working on a new project. This is going to be a "critter repair" facility set around the 1950's, or thereabouts, with everything coming in and out of the facility by rail. This time around I'm going to try and "step-up my gam...

Hello, Seen as how the temperature outside is a whopping -30F with the wind-chill, I thought that this would be a good time for an update. Thanks to Gerry's video and a picture that I found, I came up with a tunnel portal design: [img] [img]http://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/Amherst56/IMG_03....

Hi,

Thanks for the link Gerry. Quite a bit of inspiration in that video. Should be able to come up with a suitable tunnel portal from that. Will keep you posted.
Thanks again. Cheers.

Lake Coal Company

Greetings, Now that summer is over and my previous project is finished, I thought that it would be a good time to start another layout. So here is the back story: It's just after WWII and my Grandfather, Herb Lake, and his son Robert have opened the "Lake Coal Company" down in the Valley. ...

Hi Dylan, Welcome to the Forum; there's a great bunch of folks that hang-out here. Recently I completed a "shoe-box" layout that used Ho track and car chassis. Also I used a Ho 0-4-0 Switcher mechanism for my Critter. Take a look at my signature, there is a link to my blog which you may fi...

Thanks for all your comments. There aren't any Modeling Clubs in my area, so I have been pretty much flying solo. It's nice to get feedback from those of like interests. Glen, you know that I never really noticed the track against the wall still being shiny until you mentioned it. I will be giving t...
