Re: GLS30 Diesel Loco

Thanks for the tip on possible distortion. I was going to make the cab roof from brass as the sides are turned up to form rain strips, and I was thinking of using my resistance soldering unit to attach it. Alternatively I may laminate it to a piece of styrene that goes underneath the roof and is a t...

Re: GLS30 Diesel Loco

I managed to get in to the garage today and cut the replacement cab from the brass sheet. My previous experience with piercing saws has not been good, usually getting about 4mm or so before the blade goes ping. I have recently got a new piercing saw frame and some blades made by Vallorbe and this wa...

Re: GLS30 Diesel Loco

Where has the last month gone? At least the decorating is finished and the new wardrobes have been assembled - and no bits missing or left over :D In amongst going on holiday and getting back to firing on the Ffestiniog I have managed a bit more progress on the GLS30. The cab and gearbox have been s...

Re: Gnatterbox 'look and feel' hiccups?

It seems to be happening a lot on my iMac as well. Today it is going between the normal view, the stripped down view, and has gone completely yampy in the screenshot below ( for anyone who is wondering, this is Black Country terminology for utterly mad) :? http://my.gn15.info/screen_shot_2015-04-30_...

Re: Under Baseboard DC Steam Chuffer & Diesel Sound Cards

Mike, Diodes are not a good idea in the speaker leads, as the output from the sound modules will be a form of ac rather than dc. You may find that the sound will be attenuated, distorted (clipped) or disappear altogether, and you could still be feeding the output from one unit in to the speaker driv...

Re: new figures from ICM

I have got around to assembling Henry Ford and the two other figures. They went together quite well, with a little filler needed on some of the seams, especially on the sides of Henry's coat. They are nicely sculpted figures with good facial features, and I think the mechanic looks a little like Vla...

Re: GLS30 Diesel Loco

Sorry to have to report there has been no progress on the GLS30 this week :(
I have been stripping instead
Only wallpaper though - I would be deafened by the shouts of "get 'em on" if it was the other kind of stripping!

Re: GLS30 Diesel Loco

I should have added that the distance between the axle bearing and the motor is fixed, so the flanges of a larger diameter wheel than that intended by the manufacturer will be quite a bit closer to the motor. The wheels from Alan Gibson Workshop have a consistent tyre width and flange depth regardle...

Re: GLS30 Diesel Loco

The limiting factor affecting the maximum wheel size that can be fitted to a LoRider is the width of the motor and its proximity to the wheels. The LoRider is really designed for fitting to UK prototype DMUs and locos in 4mm scale, so would normally use 14mm diameter wheels. I found that the wheel b...

Re: GLS30 Diesel Loco

I finished the fight with the bathroom tiles, so its back to the GLS30. The bonnet was based on three profiles cut from 60 thou styrene, less an allowance for the thickness of the cosmetic overlays. http://my.gn15.info/sjh_gls30_bonnet_1.jpg It's obvious now, but I should have made the sides in one ...

Re: new figures from ICM

Henry Ford and two mates turned up in the post today. I got mine from Hannants https://www.hannants.co.uk - it was the first time that I have ordered from them and the service was prompt. There are 27 parts to make up the three figures, the moulding looks good with a little flash evident but nothing...

Re: GLS30 Diesel Loco

Ken, There is something strange going on as I could not see the pictures on this thread either - and I put them there!! :? All the photos were uploaded through http://my.gn15.info without any problems. I went off and looked at something else, then returned here and the pictures were visible. All ver...

Re: GLS30 Diesel Loco

I decided to turn the LoRider round to be certain of hiding the wiring inside the bonnet. http://my.gn15.info/sjh_lorider_turned.jpg For some strange reason the loco sat with the front end about 1/2mm lower than the back, but since turning the LoRider round it sits level. I have added some pieces of...

Re: Limited Access??

Just spent 15 minutes trying to log on to the forum using my iMac, and it sits there sulking with the little blue progress bar less than a quarter of the way across. The iMac can get on to any other website without a problem, access is virtually instantaneous. I have managed to get on to the forum w...

Re: GLS30 Diesel Loco

Ken, Is there a GLS30 race coming on? I think you may beat me to a finished loco as there are a number of "surprise" jobs that have cropped up that are taking up valuable modelling time, not the least of which is some of the bathroom tiles have decided that they do not want to be stuck to ...

Re: Where to buy wheels?

Have a look at http://www.alangibsonworkshop.com and check what is available in the 4mm scale wheels. The loco bogie and tender wheels mostly use a 2mm diameter axle so there may be something that you could use. I am not sure if they export, so try sending them an email once you have decided what yo...

Re: GLS30 Diesel Loco

A bit more progress has been made on the GLS30. After a lot of dithering I finally went for the High Level Kits LoRider to power the loco. This has a 48:1 gear ratio, so should be very controllable at low speeds. The LoRider comes as a nickel silver etch with all the gears and other bits needed to m...

Re: GLS30 Diesel Loco

There has been a bit of progress on the GLS30 over the weekend. It now has ballast weights and coupler blocks fitted. The coupler blocks were cut from 40 thou and 60 thou styrene sheet. A part assembled outer part of a coupler block is on the right and the component parts are on the left in the phot...

Re: GLS30 Diesel Loco

My original intention was to build the card model from the Modelik kit in parallel with an operational model in styrene. The card version seems to be slipping down the 'to do' list a bit as other things are starting to make demands on my time again. The other reason for not starting the card kit is ...

GLS30 Diesel Loco

I was going to be good. I was going to have some self discipline. I was going to finish all the tub wagons that I have started. I was going to finish Smallbeach loco shed http://gn15.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9728 . I was going to build a layout to put it and my growing collection of 1:24 m...

Re: Vestvagoy / A norway harbour at 1/13.7 scale

Those diesels are very convincing, that is a great depiction of hard use and minimal maintenance. Just noticed the bootprints in the snow around them as well - it's making me feel cold looking at the photos!
Superb work :D

Re: Cardboard locos kits

The postage was 20 Euros for outside Poland shipment, so it would make one kit quite expensive - that's my excuse for getting three. Not sure what the Dollar/Euro/Pound exchange rate works out at but I guess the US price is about equivalent to the UK price for the kits. I don't want to post any phot...

Re: Cardboard locos kits

I got a bit carried away, so the postman delivered three kits from Modelik. http://my.gn15.info/sjh_modelik_kits.jpg From what I can make out the GLS30 diesel was made for 500mm gauge as well as 600mm and 750mm gauges, so this will end up on a 16.5mm gauge chassis of some sort. I can live with the 3...

Re: Dirty Diseasels

Simon, Losing a pair of wheels has not made any difference to the running of the Bachmann Junior chassis. Just be very careful not to be too brutal when you are removing the centre driving wheel treads and spokes otherwise you may disturb the quartering or damage the final drive gear. You will need ...
