Loco Shed

For discussion of the issues faced when building a model or layout - how to replicate wood, what glues to use, exactly how much weathering can a Gnat take, a good source of detailing accessories - you get the picture, I'm sure.

2012 update

Postby Gerry Bullock » Mon Dec 03, 2012 5:50 pm

10 Gnew entries with well over a dozen new Locos - end of a page. That's it for today, it's taken over 5 hours to get this far.
Seventeen more to come later in the week.
So little time, so many ideas!!!!! GerryB.

Loco Shed

Postby Bilco » Tue Dec 04, 2012 7:26 pm

Great work on the Loco Shed, Gerry - and I'm not just saying that because some of my locos feature

I noticed, on looking at the Diema-like thread, that some of the pictures show broken links, but if I left click on the link and select View Image they appear. Is there any way I can fix it so the pictures appear?

Thanks Bill, as far as the photos are concerned I'm baffled; as they are all Photobucket they should show and do so when I look at them. I've just checked. :?

Loco Shed Closed

Postby Gerry Bullock » Tue Dec 04, 2012 7:51 pm

Well that's it for 2012, Loco Shed now closed; in fact Gnatterbox didn't want me to post the last entry as it somehow logged me out and I lost the post. Point taken end for now.
25 Gnew entries with over 30 additional Locos; Mark Goodwin has the Lion's share this time - well he just keeps building 'em.
However you'll not see a Mark entry in the Virtual Exhibition for 2012.

Well done Gerry, good to be reminded of these again, it's surprising how quickly they get forgotten and it's nice to read through again.

Loco Shed issues

Postby Gerry Bullock » Thu Apr 11, 2013 9:22 pm

I have been reviewing this Archive and find that some over zealous pruning of threads has resulted in a number of entries being redundant, i.e. there's no corresponding thread to expand upon the Loco Shed entry.
To date I've found 8 such entries and expect to find more when I review the next page.
Deletion of the link means that I can no longer identify the Loco builder.
Once I've completed my trawl through all the Loco Shed entries I will identify all the redundant Locos and ask affected Gnatterboxers to contact me to see whether there is any way we can restore this archive.
The lack of any reply within one month of my request will result in the thread within the Loco Shed section being deleted.
So little time, so many ideas!!!!! GerryB.

Here's the first batch of Locos that no longer have a thread link:

http://forum.gn15.info/viewtopic.php?t=6043 No photo + link deleted
http://forum.gn15.info/viewtopic.php?t=6045 No photo + link deleted
http://forum.gn15.info/viewtopic.php?t=6048 No photo + link deleted
http://forum.gn15.info/viewtopic.php?t=6050 Link deleted
http://forum.gn15.info/viewtopic.php?t=6057 No photo + link deleted
http://forum.gn15.info/viewtopic.php?t=6115 Link deleted

I'm only showing 5 because two belong to Steve who has other things to deal with at the moment. One is mine and I'll sort that.
Will any Gnatterboxer who recognises above threads as featuring their Loco please PM me so that a method to re-instate the Loco can be established.
Obviously the old thread cannot be used :!:
No response by May 19 will result in Loco Shed entry being deleted.
There maybe delays in my reply to any PMs as I'm away over 3 weeks shortly.
Off to setup Gneiss Cider/Farm for Show tomorrow.

Hi Gerry
the last missing link was to some of Forrest Scott Wood's stuff. He is up in the member's list as Willow Creek Traction. From memory the base thread was about a missile launch site on a tropical island. That loco was the transport to the hotel resort or something similar.
I found a mention to it here:

Hi Gerry,
Using the hint from the thread name, this one might be one of Alexander's from Germany. It looks like it is built around a HO Bachmann 44-ton power bogie, just like the one in the following link

See one of Alex's battery-electric trammers at:

http://forum.gn15.info/viewtopic.php?p=42777&highlight=#42777
This one had a rounded battery box and may have been a later effort than the missing loco.

   Does this get me a detective's badge?

I just realized, it says at this thread http://forum.gn15.info/viewtopic.php?t=8861&highlight=winky
the discription does not exist.

What happened to it?

Well, the model still exists. Just connected the battery cables.

This highlights the problem I found in the "tidy", folks. Posting something, no matter how nice, then not keeping your photo server updated, leads to threads with no images. Threads with no images then leave posts with statements like "I built this, it was fun" illustrated by a little red X. Hardly archival material in the long run, and one reason they got 'tidied'. It is the inherantly temporary nature of the internet, made readily visible.

The problem with Photobucket is, sometimes the pictures don´t show. Click again and they show up. Depending on the browser you use.

Seems the iron broom was a bit fast this time. It destroyed my work.
Time and effort wasted again. You might as well delate it from the loco shed as well.

Answering this from an Italian Laptop in a Hill-town so as keyboard isn't UK I might hit an odd character.
Whenever I find threads with missing photos I NEVER delete them. I always ask the Originator to re-instate them. NO reply after awhile then they ARE deleted.
Deleted items without such courtesy merely destroys the archive that has been built up.
Thanks for the replies relating to the entries that I highlighted in The Loco Shed, I'm not going to take any action as it's upto the originator to identify his/her thread and correct it.
As soon as I return from visiting my daughter I'll be off on holiday (this is'nt) so haven't too much time to delve into new links.
By the way I know that the VE section has also suffered from deletions.
The very first item checked upon has gone and it WAS one of the key Gn15 layouts that have inspired many. I was astounded when I found such an unwarranted deletion, obviously originator never had a chance to re-instate any photos. :?

Although I understand why some threads were reviewed, it was one of my worries that essentially historical info would be lost.
When it comes to photos, all mine are on my own paid for webspace. I am paying for it for my main website, but lots of spare room so use it.

May 19 come & gone, no replies to my April 12 post from any of originators of the dead threads.
All will now be deleted, however I'll wait until end May before doing so.

I've now trawled through Page 2 of the Loco Shed and managed to re-instate one lost photo; the rest are aOK. I'll leave Page1 for now, if anyone finds a broken link please PM me and I'll contact originator.

The problem i've had is three fold (1) finding web space to host the images (2) time & new software to repair the galleries I lost (both points because fotopic went bust) and now the ongoing problem (3) of rembering/finding threads to reinstate the link to the newly reinstated image.

Personally I'd prefer the threads left even with little red x's as the associated text in original and follow up posts is often relevant even without the pictures.

The threads I'm referring to John have been deleted so no text; only the Loco Shed entry remains as that's closed to everyone but myself and Emrys.

Ah. Mixed the other issue about deleted threads with this one, sorry.

Won't be any of mine as none of my engine pictures were Gn15, all 09.

Another 5 added, the remaining 7 will be towards end of next week as I'm off to Aldeburgh for a few days.
I've mentioned this wayback - if anyone whose Loco is now in the Loco Shed doesn't like the photo I've chosen please PM me with details of the one you'd rather see promoting your Creation.
I tend to use a photo from the early stage of construction making the viewer goto the thread to see how the build finished.
