Limited Access??

Postby cjwalas » Sun Dec 21, 2014 12:18 am

I seem to be having a problem with access to the site for some reason. I can only get onto the site for a few hours a day in the afternoon? I'm a bit of a computer idiot, so I have no idea if it's a problem with the site, my carrier (probably), my computer or what. Anyone else having this problem?

Chris, what is going on? Are you getting an error... like the DNS errors we were getting? I have been able to access the site OK for the last day or so.

Tom might know of some other issues. Hopefully this will 'heal' and we can move on.

By the way, the 'regular site' (not the IP numbered one) is working right now.

I can't remember the message, but it's something like "couldn't find the URL" or something like that. Then about 3:30 in the afternoon, it's no problem.

That sounds like the DNS problem. Seems that the domain name (the name of the site and how it is located on the internet) is hosted on a site that has been under attack and is having problems. Cross your fingers that this can be fixed soon. 8)

Ah, thanks. Now at least I won't be struggling to sort out what I'm doing wrong. Fingers crossed indeed!

If you or anybody else has this problem again can you try and access the forum by using this address

http://185.46.121.194/~heywood/forum/

Note you will have to save that address somewhere before as you won't be able to access the forum to get it !

If that works and the normal forum address does not, then indeed you have a DNS problem. Lets us know on here what happens.

For various technical reasons it's not an ideal way to access the forum - in particular it will probably have problems remembering your logon, I would not use it except in case of problems with the normal method.

Access to the sight seems to be improving slowly, but erratically. At times the whole site works fine, at others, it's very limited; photos don't show up or access to archived pages is limited, etc. and I have the same problems when using the http://185.46.121.194/~heywood/forum/ link.
It does seem to be improving, so I'm hoping digital magic is happening somewhere beyond my range of comprehension?

Ah OK if you are having problems trying to access the forum both ways, than it's not the lingering DNS problem a couple of people seem to have been having.

So we have a new problem - is anyone else finding this ?

Site seems to be OK from here in England.
(May be a more local issue.)

Seems to be working OK here in Southern California, but what it will be like when I get back to Nigeria next month will be any ones guess!

Well, it looks like things are getting worse, rather than better. Some days I can't get on the site at all and others for only a few hours... if I'm lucky.
Not looking good for me. :(

Chris, no luck with the IP that Tom posted? I haven't had problems for a few days and I'm in the same general area as you. I still think there is trouble with the domain name, but I haven't heard for sure. Hang in there... 8)

Chris

It seems strange that no one else is having having problems that we know about.

A couple of suggestions

Have you got someone nearby that you could ask to try and access the forum from their computer ? Just to see if it's something in your area that causing the problem.

What software are you running on your computer ? have you an alternate browser on it you could try? Have you checked it recently for malware?

Can you try this link when you can't access the forum http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/gn15.info

There are some more diagnostic tools we could run, but we will see if these give us any clues.

I can't imagine that it could be the same issue, but... a few years ago I was helping with another forum and the new owner of it lost access. He lived in Oregon and it turned out to be something local. Very odd, another Oregon 'Loss of Signal' issue. Hmmm...

I'm still having problems here today and for the last several days. I couldn't find the backup IP link so I marked twice again for the future. Hope this gets fixed. 8)

This is the first time I've been able to get on the site for a few days, after continual efforts. Haven't been able to access the site from any device, tried four or five different ones. Seemed I was having the same problem with the CarlArendt site, but they fixed it. No idea when, if ever, I'll be able to get back here, so in case I never do... thanks to all for such great company, inspiration and fun!

Thanks! Although I was able to get on the site once using the old address, once was all I could get on. This one seems to be working (got on twice), so maybe there's hope yet!

I don't know why you two seem to have so many problems getting to the site. As everybody else seems to be able to get in I think it must be something local to you, which is going to make it hard to trace.

When you are having problems can you try http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/gn15.info and let me know what it says?

I'm a bit distracted at the moment - an old friend to whom I owe some big favours, has been diagnosed with the big C and I'm discussing whether I need to return to UK to help him out in his business. Might be a while before I can give this much time.

The downforeveryoneorjustme entry has not worked for me at all. But I'm still getting on with the heywood address. Don't worry about us, we'll wait. Deal with priorities first.

I agree Tom, don't worry about us. Take care of 'real' things first for sure.

I don't have any issues with any other sites. The 'problem' site says it is me. That really means my ISP I suppose, but that still means no access to this site when all others work. (scratches head)

Question for you, Ken. While the heywood address gets me on the site, I can't go very far into it. For instance, I can get on the site, go to The Virtual Layout section, Pick a topic and get to that page; but I can't get past that. The page link sends me to the usual "server not found" notice. Are you getting this at all?

I'll join you in the head scratching Ken - I see no reason why you should have problems with this site specifically.

Anyway good news - my friend is responding well to chemo in spite of his age, and having talked several times with him and his new manager, they reckon that between the new manger and computer system I put in last year, they can run the business with only minimal input from my friend and so there is no necessity for me to go there and help unless he gets worse.

No all I need to is catch up with my last weeks work

Chris - when you go to a new page and get server not found again what does it say in the address bar ? is it now gn15.info or is it the numeric IP address ?

It's the Gn15 address, Tom. Also, this site through the heywood address doesn't remember me on the login no matter how many times I check the box?
Good news about your friend!
Chris
