'Orion' news

Want to talk about Sir Arthur Heywood's 15" gauge railways? About modern day minimum gauge lines? Have you found a minimum gauge line you've not seen mentioned on the website? Want directions to one of the railways that is mentioned? Whatever your interest in real minimum gauge lines, post your questions (and answer other modellers' questions) here.

'Orion' news

Postby John New » Mon May 16, 2011 5:20 pm

Our website history of Orion will shortly be updated as further information has come to hand about Orion since the earlier SLS leaflet about the engine was published back in 2005. Originally thought to have reached a centenary in 2005 it is now considered that the locomotive was completed and first steamed in 1911.

As a reminder Orion is a 9.5" gauge representation of the LNWR "Alfred the Great" class which G R S Darroch began building in his time at Crewe Works. It is the only working, original, Webb compound in the world and a superb machine.

If you wish to join the Society to help maintain and run this iconic locomotive details are at:

Orion should be in steam at the Downs School 90th Anniversary Gala. Colwall 30 Apr/1 May. A rare opportunity to see the locomotive away from its' normal base at Shildon.

One of the oldest working miniature steam locomotives on the oldest railway!

As you can see Orion was there as predicted and steamed well throughout the weekend. Photo album of the event posted at http://island-publishing.co.uk/jalbums/ ... index.html Have included shots of the rolling stock for modelling ideas. The Downs is gauge 9 1/2 inches 1/6th of UK full size standard gauge.
