info for newbies?

A general talking shop for any subject under the sun (even Monty Python). This would also be a good place to make suggestions about the site itself or about these forums (or "fora", if you're particularly pedantic).

info for newbies?

Postby rue_d_etropal » Wed Jun 08, 2016 11:42 pm

Now we don't have the old info website for Gn15, unless someone has managed to get it running again, I wonder if we need somewhere to display info, separate from discussion threads. The Trade section was intended to be the place to talk about new products, but anyone new finding us does not have a clear info page telling them about Gn15, and the products available. The trade section was also originally intended for only Gn15, but there is also G9 and O9 now.
I would suggest maybe a new section , with general info, and list of manufacturers. It should be locked, and anyone wanting something added should ask admin. The trade section can still be used for discussion, and feedback.
The new FB page I think might be attracting some attention. Everything helps, but I don't want any mix ups, and misunderstandings.

Simon, I did find a fair amount of records in the wayback machine, for the old gn15.info site.

Ken, there was talk of bringing the info site back, I think when Tom took charge of the maintenance of the forum . It does not need to be as extensive, just some parts maybe moving to a locked part of the forum. I notice there are still info threads at top, which are useful, but from dates it shows they could do with an update. In particular manufacturers, as we have a new one on the horizon, and there are others.Quite often questions get posted asking if so and so is still around, so it might also be useful to have info listing those no longer around, partly to help, and partly to document history of Gn15.

I found this via google. It is exactly the type of list I mean, but this one is out of date, scanning through the names and some links no longer work.

I'm sort of half way through trying to restore the Gn15 info site - life keeps getting in the way at the moment, probably need to try setting up a test site at home - will be quicker in the end !

My online shop is broken too and I've not got around to fixing that either ........

Somehow need to find more hours each day

Tom, time or lack of it - one reason why I was suggesting just a simple locked page here on the forum, so its all under one roof. Having said that, it was via the info page that I found the forum originally, but although there is nothing wrong in using websites like FB to help, it really needs everything together for info. It does worry me that we could end up with the same type of misunderstandings that splintered us a few years ago, and we don't have Gerry now to bond us together.
Had not realised you had another website as I thought you mainly used Shapeways e-shop and ebay.
