Multiple personalities

Postby Emrys » Sun Oct 30, 2005 9:37 am

No, I'm not admitting to being the real Yorkshire Ripper/Osama bin Laden/Vlad the Troll, this is all about this thread: <http://forum.gn15.info/viewtopic.php?p=6741#6741>.

If anyone's uncomfortable about "Gn15", switch your bookmarks to <http://www.MinimumGauge.info> for a wholly new (yet strangely familar) experience.

Hey, great...

...though I don't think I'll ever get used to posting from a pin-board. :)

Does look good, though. Thanks for the effort you've put in (dare I ask how long...)

Good afternoon Emrys

It having been suggested (by implication) that it was in some way improper to have made the suggestion in the first place that a wider and more embracing name for the forum would be appropriate, I had come to the view that my best course would be to ask your opinion direct. Accordingly I was mindful to publicly post a request that if you did feel it to be improper you would unequivocally state that to be the case. Were you to have done so I would then in a decent and honourable way have considered my position, it being the case that in my opinion it had not been in anyway improper and that I had offered the idea in polite and civilised terms.

However, the action you have taken seems to move the situation a stage further on and my initial reaction was to post a statement of gratitude. Unfortunately the new site stated that I was unable to post in anyway. Being somewhat technically challenged in these matters I gave it a little thought and wondered if it would be necessary for me to register on the new site. I set about doing so, only to be rejected on the grounds that someone with my identity and e-mail address already existed.

I am thus left feeling (a) grateful, but (b) frustrated.

Best wishes
Christopher Payne

Post & Log-in

Strange Christopher, I both logged-in and posted my previous comment above using the Gnew  site. My only comment is that I seem unable to correct my spelling mistake :!:
Perhaps it's a function of using Mozilla :?:

Odd

Postby Emrys » Sun Oct 30, 2005 5:54 pm

The "new" site should share everything (including registrations) with the original, so that would explain(ish) why you couldn't re-register. You do have to log in on each version (but then once you've made your choice you should in theory be ok).

I'll see if I can identify why Mozilla doesn't care for editing your own posts. I've just tested the new site using Firefox and it's let me edit the original post in this thread.

Very odd.

As for how long it all took, the answer is surprisingly little. About 10 minutes to find what I was looking for on Google, 5 to set up a spare directory in my webspace and upload the PHPBB software, 5 to redirect the spare URL, and about 10 to fiddle with the code. Oh, and about 15 minutes to find a suitable different "theme" for the "new" board (a lok which is starting to grate on me, I must admit - I chose it to be obviously different from the original but may switch it back ... maybe a poll would be in order?).

Mozilla problem?

Postby Emrys » Sun Oct 30, 2005 6:17 pm

[A little later] Mozilla does seem to be behaving strangely for me too, which is strange (as the only thing different is the theme).

I'll switch things back to the original and see if that makes a difference ....

[Later still] If you see this, it does make a difference.

It seems to be the "noteBored" (sic) theme that's Mozilla-unfriendly for some reason. Oh well, at least we know this theme should work as it's identical to the original Gnatterbox one.
