Under the Dome

For discussion of the issues faced when building a model or layout - how to replicate wood, what glues to use, exactly how much weathering can a Gnat take, a good source of detailing accessories - you get the picture, I'm sure.

Under the Dome

Postby DCRFAN 3 » Sun Jul 09, 2017 3:29 am

Gnatterbox used to fairly regularly have challenge builds. How about this suggestion. I recently purchased a shower dome which has as a 600mm diameter. Naturally as a modeller I looked at it and wondered what else it could be used for:

-display cover for a 1/48th Dakota. No unfortunately the tail fin strikes the dome

- astrodome or machine gun turret on the roof of the wifes Suzuki car. I thought it was a great idea, she was not so impressed

- Or how about an 'under the dome' themed pizza layout. I'm sure NASA has plans for Moon or Mars based trains :P

We could have a modular layout with large underdome/yards linked by tunnels with small passenger halts under security camera size domes 8) 8)

I can see it now.

In an alternate reality NASA got to Mars some time back, but couldn't make a base there work, so it was abandoned. Meantimes Wallace and Gromit were heading back to the moon (after their Grand Day Out visit) but took a wrong turn and arrive on Mars. Rather than the traditional go anywhere rover they have a small industrial railway and light weight temporary track panels on board their rocket.

Note: And we've seen how fast and skillfully Gromit can lay track, even though it was model railway track, in The Wrong Trousers.

A bit of digging soon reveals a seam of a strange but tasty chocolate/caramel type substance which Wallace christens Mars bars...

:D

Cheers,

Nice idea. I probably wouldn't build a dome layout – I have trouble to find modelling time as it is.

Just goes to prove there is nothing under the sun.

I've been watching this space diorama growing and think a piece of train track sticking out of the dust would really get people guessing.
