as part of the discusion and to assist all Gnatterboxers,
Here is my contribution of a comparison between the Hornby Bill/Ben chassis and the Smokey Joe chassis. The Smokey Joe chassis is several years old but has a can type motor.

The view from Down Under - note the difference in wheel spacing and the location of the wheels with respect to the rear buffer (only common reference piont as the cylinders and front of Ben comes away when dismantled):

I'm sorry but I don't have dimensions such as wheelbase, max height/width for these units readily available, but at least it is a start. When I find where I put them, I will quickly run the verniers over them. and post some dimensions.
Please add pics of other "as bought" and "unwrapped" steam locos here so that we can build up a reference of suitable bash fodder.
