|
|
| Quote: | I will put up a prize for the best small traverser in the opinion of the forum readers to be voted on at Christmas.
Rules are simple
As I will be providing the prize I will not be participating in the competition although I might make a traverser for the fun of it.
The prize will be either a piece of rolling stock or a bunch of lineside details maybe both.
1 The picture posts of the traversers need to be posted by December 15th 2006
2 The competition is open to all forum members
3 The traverser can be a combination of scratch/bodge or kitbashed.
Must be Gn15.
The winner will be chosen by a poll(will set it up later as I will need help in doing that)
|
The floor is all your folks.
The pictures will be numbered in the order they are recieved for the voting poll.
Emrys or sombody could you help me with the poll at the appropriate time?

I'm quite looking forward to being number 215...
There will be some pics by the due date (whenever that is), because not entering is not an option But just bear with me for a mo'. It was the layout, yes, not stock as well?
regards

I doubt it Andy, here's my effort no further on within the Factory than when this was taken some *@ months back :
In fact it looks much worse with all the rubbish and clutter on it in my garage. _________________ So little time, so many ideas!!!!! GerryB.

Hmmm...
Just over a week to go, and I probably won't get anything done before sunday so that leaves about 6 days to build a traverser.
Ridiculus, foolish... worth a try!

I'm hoping against hope to get the hour I need for the hull tonight. Four hours effort so far and I'm starting to think I could have given Jim a run for his money at Swanley. Whatever I've got by Sunday night is probably it. _________________ Gn15: Gnot so much a scale, more a state of mind

I'll put the work in progress shots on the bodge traverser thread and edit this to have the latest shot(s). What the hell, it's an entry even if it's only four hours work away from being a soldering test piece. I've got the 'platework' on but there's no chance of doing the wheelhouse before I go to Belgium, so what you see is what you get, I'm afraid.
There's more on the bodge thread, but here's the short version of the alt-hist.
The story of what was then known only as 1160(S) begins late in 1945, when the Hadselo manganese mine purchased for their scrap value the pontoon, together with some 15" gauge stock from a top secret tunnel project, left behind by the liberating forces. The pontoon was fitted at the yard at Svolvaer with a pair of diesel engines scavenged from wrecked armoured cars, and a jury rigged superstructurewas added. The pontoon was used to ferry wagons form Hadselo to Svolvaer without needing to handle the produce until it was loaded onto the Hurtigrute ship for onward transport to Bodo. Pretty soon other goods were being transported on the little boat and with profits dwindling the mine branched out and launched an irregular transport service as a feeder to the south- and northbound ships.
As anyone who has visited Hadselo will attest, the mine is no more Smile but the Lofoten boat service had become an institution. Renamed the 'Amos Gnollies' after the then mayor of Svolvaer, and supported by volunteer labour keeping her as shiny as possible, the community lifeline service continued until the end of the twentieth century, never making a profit but a source of pride for the islanders. Sadly, in 1999 the Amos Gnollies needed new engines and there was no way that the volunteers could afford the cost. She was laid up at Svolvaer, but the locals refused to give up and set to selling souvenirs to the tourists who were by now cruising the coast on the Hurtigrute ships.
Hurtigrute management became aware of the initiative and offered to match the money raised; they also persuaded the Kvaerner yard at Stavanger to carry out the refit at cost and against all the odds the Amos Gnollies returned to service late in 2001, providing a necessary service into the 21st century.

Thanks Martin - yes it is the beginnings of a vertical boiler steam traverser (sorry about the rather dark photo) that will run in a yard between the two halves of my factory layout (roughly doubling the size of it).
It will ultimately have 3 tracks, the front one will run into the building interiors on display, the middle one will run between buildings (into fiddle yards and possibly extensions to left and right). The back one will run into factory buildings (more fiddle yards), although I intend to have a hoist on the right and a water tower on the left as well.
It this rate I coud keep extending my layout indefinately.

Hey Jim, nice paintwork, you managed to make your card look just like wood I seem to recall someone layed down the gauntlet to build a steam traverser, didnt think anyone would take it on, well done.
Now the concept of a whole bunch of modules, linked by traversers that does get the mind working overtime and opens up all sorts of possibilities. _________________ Steve Bennett
