|
|
It's a simple challenge: build a cheap Gn15 model.
It can be a loco, a wagon, a coach or even a building.
In fact, there's only one rule: the budget. To quote the excellent Tom Waits:
| Tom Waits wrote: | | "you got $29.00 and an alligator purse" |
OK, maybe not an alligator purse but your budget is the local equivalent of US$29.
The winner will be chosen by the votes of your peers and there'll be a (fairly obvious) prize to the winner.
WHen you're ready, post a photo of your creation to this thread. The closing date's been chosen to allow time for voting and for the winner to get their prize in time for a Christmas/Holiday present.
Easy, eh? Then get modelling! _________________ Emrys Hopkins

Are models which have already been built an option?
I think the actual cost of my first (and currently only) was £9.99 for the chassis, in addition to that I used half of the parts in Steve's detailing kit and 1/2 a sheet of A4 plasticard, so after doing a bit of maths the cost of my loco was just over £12.
I'll wait until I've built a second (hopefully cheaper) loco before entering though. |

Of course. I should probably add a "One entry per GnATTERboxer" rule, though. _________________ Emrys Hopkins

Does this mean we can use an alligator purse over and above our $29 limit? And what if it's imitation alligator?

Yes. Why not? I'd prefer it was imitation, though.
To recap, then, there are two rules:
- You have a budget of US$29.00 plus a (preferably imitation) alligator purse.
- One entry per GnATTERboxer.

I was just kidding, but I might consider the "Alligator Purse Express"...just to make everyone else look good!
Chris
PS. It would be imitation alligator, I promise! |

Sorry Emrys: Is an 09 model allowed?
I work that out as €20... _________________ Andy in Stuttgart

Given that I've now got my hands on a cheap Lima chassis (£6) I think I've definitely got a basis for an entry. |

Sorry, Andy. I agree with your calculations but the model should be G scale (Gn15 or, at a pinch, Gnine if it's a loco or wagon). _________________ Emrys Hopkins

Can I enter a entire layout?
I built my cardboard layout for a bit under $7. _________________ Failure is just success rounded down. |

Was having similar thoughts myself I think the costs were a bit less than that, but I do have a large scrapbox .
Now with all the changes in the world money markets, when are we going to set the $29, the value might be a whole lot different at the end of the challenge . _________________ Steve Bennett

I see no reason why not.
As for which exchange rates apply, I'd hope that the $29 is more a "spirit" thing but if you want an absolute exchange rate, how about:
USD$29.00 = CND$29.50 = EUR20.75 = GBP£14.50 = AUD$34.00 = NZD39.50 _________________ Emrys Hopkins

Certainly, if it cost less than $29. A better photo might improve your chances of winning, though. _________________ Emrys Hopkins

I thought most Alligators are a dark green! But I bet if some of our lot where to paint one it would be yellow with black stripes at the front and back.
Are we limited simply to alligators or would crocodiles, caymens and gavialidae also be permitted?

Before this gets out of hand I should remind people that the song's lyrics refer clearly to "$29.00 and an alligator purse", not "$29.00 and an alligator" _________________ Emrys Hopkins

Dont be too hasty Nick, you still have a couple of months and you might build something else in that time that you would rather enter and you are only allowed one entry. The speed you are building, you could have quite a few to choose from . _________________ Steve Bennett

So how are we defining a "purse" and are other types of handbags not permitted? You really need to spell out the rules to this contest a bit more clearly
You would think I would have better things to do on a sunday morning, but everyone else is asleep and my son is sleeping in our family room where I do my model work, so here I am annoying Emrys

Very true Steve, I've still got that other Lima power bogie to build on and that cost me £3
Am I allowed to enter an entire train? as I think the tourist loco and carriage will come under the budget limits too. |

Just to ask a SERIOUS question (Harrumph ), how do parts left over from other projects etc. go for costing? i.e. I have a bogie (nurse! hankie please!) from a Porter which obviously cost more than $29 but would otherwise be thrown away, therefore to me it has little or no value. I'll try to clarify. If you buy something for the model then it comes out of the budget. Left overs and things lying around are, within reason, free.
People may be suspicious if you mention that just happened to have an On30 Shay lying around, but I suspect this would be reflected in the voting when that stage comes. _________________ Emrys Hopkins
