The overall standard was very high. Difficult, very difficult.
However Chris gets my vote. I have never seen anything like that irrespective what its made from!
Truly stunning work.

Hey Michael;
Thanks for fixing the exclusion.
Now, I'll say again in this poll.20
| Quote: | I want to vote for
this part of that layout
the way the one fellow made that thing
how this other guy used color and style
how that one's backscene sets a mood
how lighting draws the eye in on this layout
Is it modeling or is it art
Well, yes, of course, it is!

How did we get so many people who are so creative all in this one place here?
(there's also the matter of how many here are just plan gnuts, but that's for a different thread) _________________ Today's scientists have substituted mathematics for experiments, and they wander off through equation after equation, and eventually build a structure which has no relation to reality. -- Nikola Tesla, Modern Mechanics and Inventions, July, 1934 |

Good gravy! Chris has one heck of an imagination! Love that kind of stuff. Kind of reminds me of a Malcolm Furlow (if memory serves) layout in MR once. Where do you get your inspiration,Chris? Love it!
Nice work by all. Makes me want to get out of armchair mode and actually do something! _________________ "Any tool can be the right tool"

Sounds like a cliche, but they are all winners. There is not a single one that is not worthy of a vote, in fact, one vote is not enough . Each has something we can all learn or take inspiration and ideas from. Hopefully, all that took part, even those that didnt get finished in time, will have enjoyed the experience and gained from it. I know that watching them develop has been a very enjoyable experience for me and they have supplied me with more ideas than I will ever have time to try out. Well done one and all. _________________ Steve Bennett

I too agree that they are all winners. My criteria for how good a layout is:"Would I stand and look at it FOR SOME TIME at an exhibition?" The answer to all is "Yes."
Well done, everyone! _________________ Regards,

It is a tribute to ALL the entrants that a material which is considered by many people to be only useful for packaging other items, has been turned into wonderful models. If I had not seen the development of these layouts, I would have had a very hard time believing that 99% or more of each of them consisted of card or paper.
I consider all of them to be winners, I know I could not have achieved similar standards in the same medium. I have pointed modelling friends towards the topics containing these layouts, they have all been impressed with the standard of modelling.
Congratulations to all the entrants, you have taught us much. _________________ Barry Weston

This challenge really has been a great experience. I've learned as much from looking at the other efforts as I've learned doing my own layout.
But for my own opinion, I'd say next time forget the competition aspect of it. I know a contest with prizes gets people out of the armchair to do something, but I also think that the competing aspect of it puts off some modelers that get intimidated and otherwise might have participated. Even having a First, Second, and Third place acknowlegement might be too much. My vote (if I have one) would be to give everyone who finishes a "certificate of Gn15 accomplishment". Cheap to print out, but a worthy enough award for the effort! Then we can discuss our favorites on the Forum.
Hope I haven't stepped on anyone's toes with this!

I think that is a really good suggestion Chris. I dont know if it would be enough to get people building, I would hope so and you could well be right about it encouraging those who lack the confidence to compete in a contest. Will be interesting to hear other opinions. Maybe they could also gain another medal on the forum for successful completion . _________________ Steve Bennett

Over the last year or so I have been really busy with other projects (not just railway related) and although I considered building a paper layout, I decided in the end not to. I'm also not someone who enters modelling competitions for some of the reasons mentioned here. I think that to try to judge 'best' between the diversity of styles and models shown here is very difficult and not something that I will be doing.
Congratulations to all who entered. I'm impressed with all of them. I have a personal favourite or two but that's more to do with my enjoyment of the style and design rather than the quality of the model making.
Contests and prizes do encourage people to finish things and I'd not discourage that. It just isn't for me.

As I have said before, I would never have 'completed' a layout if it hadn't been for the competition so for that I'm grateful. For those who thought of entering but didn't, I hope at least some of you will join in next year, if only for the 'challenge' of a deadline . Chris, I'm sorry you won't be voting. Although there may be a bit of a runaway winner (and probably deservedly so ), I for one entered with the hope of at least garnering a vote or two as it is a competition after all and we all knew that when we entered. Besides, it may give us an idea which way people vote, ready for next years' challenge _________________ Andrew Milner, still trying to figure it out.... |

I thought that now might be an appropriate time to make a comment.
My hope in proposing the card challenge was that it would spark some creative and innovative approaches to working in a medium that most of us tend to think of temporary or mock up materials. I must say I am amazed by the work that has been done by everyone, and I totally agree with Chris's sentiment.
| Quote: | | I think that to try to judge 'best' between the diversity of styles and models shown here is very difficult |
A challenge or competition does for many, spur on that desire to push the limits of ones skill and ability, and as Andrew has said,
| Quote: | | I would never have 'completed' a layout if it hadn't been for the competition |
and from the comments by Chris Walas I think that that sentiment was shared in many ways.
I have not had much time this year being very busy on my 1:1 model of a place to live, and so have vicariously enjoyed the work done during this challenge by everyone
Each layout has shown me something to learn and store away to use in the future.
I would like to thank you all for participating in this challenge and for the support and advice that many gave me in the begining to get it going and for the prizes most generously offered by members.
But most of all for the visual feast that these models have provided, I will be able to savour them over the Christmas.
The pole was set to run for 7 days from the 20th so if you haven't voted and wish to there is still time. _________________ Regards Michael

I thought I'd posted a reply last night but I appear to have forgotten the all important Submit button
Michael, thanks for the challenge. It definately made me use a material previously only used if it had the word plastic in front of it so it pushed my boundries and I now have a stock of various types of card in my modelling supplies (but not for baseboards .
For the future I like the suggestion by Chris of Santa Barbara. Having a specific aim/perimeters and perhaps for many of us, a limited time frame, may just be the necessary final straw to get out of the armchair and into the workshop _________________ Paul

So now that many of us have stockpiles of all sorts of card and paper, does this mean another Card Challenge/Competition/Contest???

Even though I've cast my vote I must say that now I've had time to look at the other entries the overall standard really was very high
That's not to say I regret where my vote ended up, no way, but just to say well done to all who took part.
It can only be good for Gn15.

Today being the 27th and the poll only running for 7 days, I congratulate the winners. Even though we know that all are winners.
I had agreed to supply the first prize, and it is in fact the Jung loco that I made out of card over a Percy chassis I will be wrapping this up and sending it to you Chris Walas. Chris if you PM me with your address I will send it off. The second and third prizes were donated by others so I have no control over their shipments. and hope that they make the arrangments for those prizes.
This challenge has indeed been a wonderful visual feast.
I will also take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New Year and look forward to submitting my own entry in the next challenge. _________________ Regards Michael

Although I was not a prize winner, nor realistically expecting to be when I entered, I found this challenge a VERY stimulating worthwhile exercise in it's own right. As a returner to the hobby my model making at the end of the two contests was significantly better than at the begining and I doubt I would have acheived so much without the competitve edge and a deadline to meet. Therefore I hope some one does have the time to organise a repeat card layout challenge for 2008.
Congratulations to the three winners here and to Gerry for Freya - well done and worthy winners all of you. _________________ John

Congratulations to Chris and everyone who took part in this challenge. They certainly showed creativity and imagination in the use of card, and provided inspirational ideas aplenty! Someone suggested that all participants should have a medal added to their bar - that gets my vote.

I would also like to add my congratulations to Chris and thanks to all who took the time to vote. I love the idea of a certificate if someone wants to design one please . I should have done this before voting started but I have written to Michael about it so I'll do it anyway and hope it doesn't sound too weird as I was lucky enough to win a prize.
Everyone put time and effort in to make the competition so enjoyable, so I would like to offer John, Jon, Paul and Stefan a pair of my figures each as thanks for entering and in recognition of their fine efforts. It seems a shame not to have prizes for everyone, especially at this time of year. I hope this is taken in the spirit offered and if any of you would like to take me up on it, pm or e-mail me!
