Seeing all the nice layouts on this site gave me some inspiration to start my own. The layout is built on a plastic pie plate. The train and track are from a toy Christmas Express train - they are roughly TT scale.
I haven't decided what structures and scenery to put on it yet. It has a cover which gives about 3 inches of clearance - so what I put on it can't be very tall.
The train is battery powered. A AA battery is mounted inside the boiler. The motor is mounted vertically inside the cab. _________________ John

Photos didn't show. Is it my computer?
Like the 10 Mile Branch. I personally haven't finished a thing. Keep hopping all over between European stuff, On30, Gn15, HO USA stuff, metal detecting,
WW II aviation models, WW II collectables, antique tractors and gas engines, small time farming, and now with spring on it's way, gardening,and....well...you see where this is heading. So many hobbies,so little time, and money!
By the way, are you far from Brewton? Have friends there. Just curious!
regards,

Thanks! Sorry you couldn't see the pictures. I'll try posting the direct link to my Picassaweb page and see if that works.

Daryl, I live in Troy, about 100 miles from Brewton, but I've been through there many times. It's one of my favorite railfanning spots - CSX runs down the middle of main street. _________________ John |

Pics are showing fine here
Glad to see I'm not the only one to have one of those toy trains
A slightly different style but obviously from the same source. The caboose looks like it is ready to be used as a riding car without needing modification, I'm guessing that the direction you are heading with it
Looks like fun ahead _________________ Steve Bennett

Thanks, everyone. It was raining outside, so I did some more work on the layout.
Steve, you're right, I do plan on using the caboose for a riding car. I haven't come up with a figure yet. _________________ John |

More progress on the layout:
The "engineer" is scratchbuilt from Sculpey clay over wire and aluminum foil. He makes the caboose a little top-heavy, so he doesn't actually "ride", yet. _________________ John |

Nice job so far. Maybe you could add some lead weight in the bottom of the caboose to stabilise it. Hopefully it doesn't end up too heavy for the engine to pull it. _________________ Glen Anthony.

With the caboose, will the roof come off, then you could have the figure sat low inside it _________________ Steve Bennett

Thanks, Glen and Steve. I'm going to try both of your suggestions. The top and walls of the caboose are all one piece, but I'm thinking about converting it into a tender. If I do that, I'll cut it down so the figure will ride lower. _________________ John |

I got it to work. Here's how:
- Added weight to the bottom of the caboose
- Reversed the caboose to run cupola-first
- Made a "seat" for the figure

looks like fun
I'm impressed at how well it runs, a lot better than the set I have. Maybe I need to spend a bit more than the £1.00 ($1.50) next time _________________ Steve Bennett

Great little video John. The beach location will provide lots of potential detailing. I like the dust cover too

Looking interesting John.
As it's a beach setting, how about adding a beach umbrella, with a different bright colour on each segment? That should contrast nicely with the dark green bushes. _________________ Glen Anthony.

G'day
If you need weight in the caboose use a battery connected to the loco.
Train will then run for twice as long

What can I say - Certainly guaranteed to raise nothing if not a charmed smile.
Lovely little build, carries with it an innocence of nature that escapes us all before we realise what a loss it actually is!! It's essences such as this build that provide the clues as to where we might find it again.

Thanks for the kind words, Andi. I'm glad you enjoyed the layout.
Adrian, that's a good idea. I'm considering building some more cars and may need the extra power. _________________ John |
