Hi guys,
Just got done last night on my second Gn15 critter using another Bachmann gas mech
http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af326/riogruNt/Crazy%20Gn15%20stuff/
I wanted it to look like it had been built in the same backshop as my other unit (see side by side pic) but with a few variations on the original design > eg bell vs airhorn / long roof vs short roof
I went a lot easier on the weathering using the logic that a full length roof would protect the cowling & body from the elements more
Still couldn't resist some subtle weathering / rust patches & streaks though + used a bunch on Ozark details to finish
Some rolling stock & a few structures in progress
Havin' fun!

Steve --
Real nice pair of critters you've got there! Each with its own character ... and the "fleet" look at the same time. Lots of great touches in the detailing and weathering too ... look forward to seeing your rolling stock, etc. _________________ Cheers,

Steve,
These critters are beautiful works of art that convey the true meaning of the word "critter". There is so much detail to take in that every time I view the photographs, I see something new. I would like to see some more please, and thank you for sharing this pair.
Kind regards
Mark |

A shiny brass bell on Gn15 Far too ostentatious. Sir Arthur would not have approved _________________ Paul

Steve, great work, the two locos side by side give a good sense of the shop that built them. Frugal matter of fact no nonsense work horses. _________________ Regards Michael

Hi Jack,
Thanks for asking, here's how I pretty much did both critters:
- I started with the Bachmann gas mechanical Davenports > these run great have a cast chassis & sort of "waddle" along the track with their side rods visible
- Stripped all the On30 components like the cab / handrails / stack etc but kept the engine cowling & set it aside for painting / detailing
- Taped over the motor & components (good time to decide if you are going DCC or staying with DC) I kept these DC based on my layout design & the type of control / operation I have planned. Airbrushed the chassis / sideframes a dirty grimy colour
- Made the buffer beams from Mt Albert timber & added details
- Cab / roof etc are scratchbuilt so I was as creative as I wanted with this but really wanted an open cab for both
- Most of the rust weathering was done with a small piece of foam held in self closing tweezers & I then daubed varying shades of rust coloured paint onto the cowling / roof. I went a bit leaner on the weathering to the second critter (with the full length roof) and used a few techniques that I've been trying the past year or so on this loco
- The details are made up of various generic O / HO parts that look OK with the majority of G scale specific details Ozark Miniatures. As an example the bell and headlights are Precision Scale O details. I like using white metal parts treated with "Blacken It" cos you get a realistic grimy finish that can be weathered further.
- I kind of built the cabs & seats around the SLM figures but chopped the head of one put a pin in & turned his head to look forwards. Filled the neck with Tamiya putty & painted him
Had loads of fun building both, even though I did them 3 years apart and have another on the workbench in progress.
Hope that explains things a bit
Thanks for your interest Steve _________________ Steve
